The Philadelphia Flyers let go of general manager Ron Hextall to start the week. It caught many by surprise and the Flyers didn't have a press conference until the next day to answer questions about it. Reasons for his firings are many including the refusal to fire Dave Hakstol, not being aggressive enough on the trade market, and there's some speculation in regards about how Hextall wanted to handle goalie prospect Carter Hart. Hextall himself said the firing totally caught him off guard. "I was shocked," Hextall told Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I was hoping to finish my career here."
The former GM says the team wasn't peaking enough for him to make any huge blockbuster deals. "I didn't feel we were at go-time," Hextall added. "I didn't feel (like) the Winnipegs and Nashvilles and the Tampas, that we were quite there."
However he did confirm he was trying to make moves and was currently in discussion with other teams. "Was I open to moving prospects and/or young players who could help us this season and beyond? Absolutely," Hextall said. "We had some talks in the works at the time. Whether something would have happened, I don't know. I can assure you I was being aggressive."
