All season long, the powerplay of the Philadelphia Flyers has been a dark spot of this team. The horrendous play while having a man advantage has been somewhat masked due to their overall team success and their dominance on the penalty kill, but the struggles reared their head again on Saturday night and resulted in a 6-3 loss on national television to rival New Jersey Devils. These latest stats on the powerplay will shock you.
It is no surprise that teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning are among the top of the league in powerplay percentage as those teams are perennial playoff teams and have been for sometime. The Lightning are among the top of the league with a 30.2 conversion percentage on the powerplay, and the Flyers are second to last with a 13.3 conversion percentage.
All teams in the bottom five of powerplay percentge, excluding the Flyers, currently sit on the outside of the playoff picture which begs the question, can the Flyers still make the playoffs while having the worst powerplay percentage in the entire NHL?
In 56 games, the Flyers have only scored 24 powerplay goals, converting 13% of their opportunities. On Saturday night, the Flyers had over four opportunities to convert and only converted once.
Is it too late for the Flyers powerplay to be saved?
