Philadelphia Flyers trade speculation continues to focus around power forward Wayne Simmonds. Before the draft a report by Michael Russo of The Athletic mentioned that the Flyers were gearing up to trade the power forward. On the draft floor during the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft, Flyers general manager Ron Hextall denied those rumors and stated the Flyers were planning on re-signing the 29 year old. However that seems to be far from the case, John Boruk of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports the Flyers almost dealt Simmonds at the draft. According to Boruk, the Flyers and Calgary Flames were working on a deal that would have sent Simmonds to the Flames in exchange of defenseman Dougie Hamilton. Calgary however wasn't interested in a straight up one for one trade, and wanted the Flyers to add a prospect like Travis Sanheim or Philippe Myers. Hextall basically hung up the phone at that request:"Again, would we like to add a big piece? Yeah, we would absolutely, but we're not trading one of our top prospects for a guy that's going to play for us for a year or two," Hextall said. "You look back in two years and you go, 'What was I thinking?'"
Did Hextall make the right move by walking away from this trade?
