The 2024 NHL trade deadline is quickly approaching as just a little over a month remains until March 8. The deadline looks different for each team, with some teams looking to unload veterans for young assets and picks, while some teams take a more short term approach and try to land top stars to put them in the best position for a Stanley Cup run.
For the Philadelphia Flyers rivals in the New York Rangers, many are expecting New York to unload some young assets and listen to calls in order to land players who are in "win now" mode as they go full force in a cup run.
A big name popping up in the Rangers organization is former second overall pick and Finnish right wing Kaapo Kakko. A breakout season last year as well as being just 22-years old both makes him an attractive piece for a rebuilding franchise and a piece that the Rangers can use as leverage in trade talks.

Kakko garnered tremendous experience last season playing all 82 games, recording 40 points on 18 goals and 22 assists in 2023. Kakko also has almost 30 games of playoff experience under his belt, a great quality to bring to a team that is full of youth and in the rebuilding process.
Kakko's availability was first reported by TSN reporter Darren Dreger who not only thinks Kakko is a good piece skill wise, but his cheap contract makes it easy for any team to take on.
"A second overall pick in 2019 of the New York Rangers, Kaapo Kakko is an asset that perhaps Chris Drury, general manager of the Rangers, considers using as trade bait. I know that multiple sources have said that Drury is taking calls on Kakko."
