The 2023-24 NHL season brings an unexpected twist as the Philadelphia Flyers are connected to a coaching change in Edmonton, with the Flyers former coach heading there way.

In a significant move, the Edmonton Oilers announce the departure of head coach Jay Woodcroft, making way for Kris Knoblauch to assume the leadership role. Known for his prior stint as an assistant coach with the Flyers, Knoblauch steps into the challenge of guiding the Oilers.

Knoblauch's coaching prowess was evident during his tenure with the Erie Otters from 2012-2017, where he mentored notable players like Connor McDavid, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, Connor Brown, and Anthony Cirelli. Now, reuniting with McDavid and Brown in Edmonton, Knoblauch brings a wealth of coaching experience to a new setting.

The 45-year-old served as an assistant coach with the Flyers from 2017 to 2019, collaborating with Dave Hakstol. Their partnership witnessed playoff success in the first season, highlighted by Claude Giroux's extraordinary 100-point performance and Sean Couturier's standout contribution.

Following his time with the Flyers, Knoblauch took on coaching responsibilities for the Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Rangers' minor league affiliate. Returning to the NHL with the Oilers, Knoblauch faces a familiar yet challenging scenario.

The Flyers' final season under Knoblauch was marked by injuries and goaltending challenges, with eight different goalies and 38 different players taking the ice. As Knoblauch transitions to lead the Oilers, he carries invaluable lessons from a demanding season in Philadelphia.
