It has been reported today that the Carolina Hurricanes are on the cusp of resigning their young forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi to an 8 year $4.25-4.5 million dollar AAV extension.

According to TSN insider Chris Johnston, due to the contract length of eight years, the deal may not be completed until the deadline on Mar. 21.

In 2021, KK (Kotkaniemi) joined the Canes after a successful offer sheet last summer which saw him leave the Montreal Canadiens.
If the reports are true, resigning him is a huge step in a good direction with a manageable cap hit. At only 21, he will be 29 by the time the contract expires. The former third overall pick has time to meet his potential and is a proven playoff guy.
His new contract will see him make about 2 million less than what he is currently earning (6 million).
With Vincent Trocheck and Derek Stepan both free agents, this announcement comes as an insurance buffer to ensure the team's future at center.
Kotkaniemi currently has 11 goals and 12 assists through 54 games played.
Just a note that Joel Farabee has only had 1 goal in his last 13 games and makes 5 million a year until 2027-2028. In hindsight, the Flyers may have overpaid.
