As the trade deadline approaches and the Philadelphia Flyers prepare for the next phase of the rebuild, there are some Flyers players who could be possibly bought out of their contracts to make room for new talent. According to Dan Esche at "The Brotherly Puck", here are a few Flyers that could see a potential buyout in the future.

One of the main pieces who could be bought out is goalie Cal Peterson. The Flyers originally acquired Peterson from the LA Kings during the 2023 offseason with hopes to find someone who can be reliable behind Carter Hart.
With the emergence of goalie Samuel Ersson who has won 11 games and recorded 2 shutouts since Nov. 5, the Flyers have two solid goalies on the current roster as Peterson sits in Lehigh Valley with the Phantoms.
The Flyers also have a top goalie prospect in Alexei Kolosov who is expected to be with the Phantoms next season. It would only cost the Flyers $3.8 million to buyout Peterson, rather than keeping him in his current $5 million dollar contract.

A second Flyer that could be bought out, although surprising, is Cam Atkinson. Atkinson had a stellar performance on Saturday night with two goals, snapping his 26 game goalless drought. Atkinson had a strong 2021 season with the Flyers before missing all of last season with an injury.
A buyout would cost the Flyers just above a $2.3 million, which many are predicting that the Flyers could use that money to resign Owen Tippett and Carter Hart.
Lastly, Ryan Ellis seems like the biggest candidate for a buyout from the Flyers. Ellis has only played four games for the Flyers and over the next six seasons has a $13 million cap hit with an AAV of $6 million for the next three years.
If the Flyers want to make big moves in the 2026 offseason with key stars on the market, buying out contracts like Ellis would give them financial flexibility to land a big market free agent.
