Over the past several months, tensions have been steadily rising between the Russian Federation and the Philadelphia Flyers, as well as the IIHF, regarding Russian goaltender Ivan Fedotov. This dispute stems from a contract disagreement and his service in the Russian military, which has escalated the situation.

As a result of this dispute, Fedotov has been suspended from the CKSA hockey organization for four months. In defiance of this suspension, he continues to play for the Moscow team. Fedotov was originally intended to be the Flyers' future goaltender, serving as the backup and potentially succeeding Carter Hart in the future.
With the Fedotov situation currently in a state of uncertainty, the Flyers have additional concerns stemming from their recent draft choice, Matvei Michkov. Michkov was selected as the 7th overall pick in the 2023 entry draft and is considered a vital offensive talent crucial to the Flyers' development and their rebuilding phase.
Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russia's involvement in a protracted quagmire, there is a possibility that more soldiers will be required for the war effort. This situation could potentially place Michkov directly in the position of serving his country.
Michkov has committed to a three-year contract with CKSA, which will conclude when he reaches the age of 21, making him eligible to join the Flyers in North America. Much can transpire over the next three years, and the Flyers are hopeful that tensions will ease, allowing Michkov to join the team without any complications.
