Yesterday, The Fourth Period published their updated version of the Trade Watch list, and there was something a little surprising: the Flyers were one of the two teams linked to Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry.

Montreal's GM Kent Hughes already told that with a good offer, he could pull the trigger by sending Petry to another team. The Habs are beginning their rebuild and are looking to restart the machine by acquiring prospects, draft picks and young established NHL players.
With that being said, Petry is not going to cost a lot of assets to Philadelphia if the organisation was indeed looking to add him to the roster. At 34 years old, his best days have passed, but he's still a D-man that can play on the right side of a 2nd pair, and sometimes on the 1st pair.
We all know that the right side of the defence is a mess, and Chuck Fletcher will probably look at some options to fill these holes during the offseason. Ryan Ellis' health is a big interrogation, Rasmus Ristolainen and Justin Braun could be gone by the deadline. If the former does indeed stay, that means that he signed an extension that probably be of a 5-or-6-year length, which is not ideal, even if the Flyers would like to bring him back.

Petry's contract will end in 3 years and his impact on the cap is pretty much the same than what Risto is going to ask. Those two players have different styles of play, but they fill the same hole. Of course, Petry is not having a good year, but pretty much everyone on the Canadiens roster didn't play well until the departure of Dominique Ducharme.
In 6 games since the hiring of Martin St. Louis behind the bench, Petry registered 5 points with a 22:18 average time of ice.
Petry still got it. The ability to move the puck and his skating are two of his strengths and the Flyers don't have a lot of players like him.
At the end of the day, it will depend on one thing: the return of Rasmus Ristolainen with the Flyers next season. If he chooses to go somewhere else, the Flyers should definitely try to acquire Petry.
