Many NHL general managers had been anticipating for a large raise in the salary cap over the previous couple of seasons. Elliotte Friedman, the Hockey Insider for Sportsnet, said this past offseason that he thought the salary limit will increase significantly the following season, much to the pleasure of many organizations.

Sadly, following the NHL Board of Governors meeting, things have changed, and everyone's favourite NHL Commissioner, Garry Bettman, would offer some very discouraging news yesterday.
Gary Bettman says #NHL is now projecting a $70m remaining escrow balance at the end of the season, which would result in the salary cap rising just $1 million this summer to $83.5 million.

Not willing to say now whether a negotiation with #NHLPA for larger increase is possible.

While this is unfortunate, other NHL executives chose to focus their press conference on various aspects of a prospective playoff expansion. However, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that while many NHL workers support the concept, they are afraid to offend Bettman since Bettman "hates" it.
Friedman on TJMS says Bettman hates the idea of expanded payoffs, says there is no appetite for it, a lot of the executives don't want to get on Bettman's bad side so they don't bring it up, but it's pretty clear they'd love to see it, it would raise more revenue.
