The Ongoing Debate: Pride in the NHL

Last year, a hot topic in the NHL revolved around the use of pride jerseys and related items on players' gear, creating an ongoing dilemma for the league and its fans.
Provorov's Stand Sparks Controversy
This all started when Ivan Provorov, a former Flyers defenseman, chose not to wear a pride jersey during warm-up. He explained it clashed with his religious beliefs, leading to his decision not to put it on. Once this became public, other players also expressed their reservations about donning pride colors.

In response, the NHL banned all visible pride-related accessories on equipment this off-season and made it quite clear.
Dermott's Quiet Challenge
However, the plot thickens. Travis Dermott, a former player for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks who now plays for the Arizona Coyotes, decided to test the waters. He discreetly added pride colors to his stick, believing that the small amount of tape wouldn't attract much attention.
But in a world where cameras and fans are vigilant, it didn't go unnoticed.
The NHL has now responded by stating they will review the situation, without specifying potential fines or penalties for Dermott.
Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott used Pride tape on his stick in a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.

When asked if Dermott would be fined or otherwise disciplined, the NHL told The Athletic in a statement: «We will review it in due course."
Expect More Conversations
It's clear that the discussions about pride tape and merchandise in the NHL won't fade away soon. Many players are passionate about supporting pride, and this topic is likely to remain in the spotlight, with others possibly challenging the league's stance.
