Flyers celebrate goal earlier in season

The 2023-24 Philadelphia Flyers have been defined as a chippy, tough team that has given some of the NHL's best clubs fits. Although young, the Flyers have a legitimate shot at the playoffs and the play of their special teams has been a key to their early success.

It's no secret that the Flyers powerplay has been a struggle this season as the team currently ranks last in powerplay conversion percentage. However, the past few games they have shown improvements on the powerplay and have been able to get things going.
In their most recent win, Sean Couturier converted on a powerplay and netted in a goal that gave the Flyers momentum in their win on Saturday against Calgary. With guys like Egor Zamula earning more minutes on powerplay opportunities, it seems that John Tortorella has his team on the right track of breaking out of the powerplay funk.
Oddly enough, the Flyers are among the top half of the league in special teams goals for percentage, coming in 13th at 55%. This statistic measures powerplay goals plus penalty goals for and converts it into a percentage.

What has been most impressive of the Flyers have been their penalty kill. The Flyers are among the league's best on the penalty kill and have converted ten shorthanded goals on the year. 2024 NHL All-Star Travis Konecny leads the NHL in shorthanded goals with five, adding another in Saturday's win against Calgary.
The Flyers penalty kill has been nicknamed a "power kill" because of the success they have had at it this season. With the Pittsburgh Penguins powerplay also being in the lower half of the league, the Flyers could have another opportunity to show off their power kill in tonight's matchup.
