Since their first meeting in 1967, the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins rivalry has been filled with animosity, emotion and memorable moments. From playoff feuds to Stadium Series comebacks, here are some of the most memorable moments in recent history from the Flyers vs Pens rivalry.
2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs
In 2012 the Flyers and Pens met in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and many saw it as just another opponent in the way for Pittsburgh as they would cruise to a Stanley Cup Championship with their stars led by
Sidney Crosby.
The Flyers, however, proved to be a lot more than Pittsburgh could handle. The Flyers dominated the series to start, taking a 3-0 series lead that was sparked by a Jakub Voracek game winner in overtime of Game 1, followed by a double hat trick by
Sean Couturier and
Claude Giroux in Game 2.

After the Flyers took the 3-0 series lead in a win that saw plenty of fights and animosity, Pittsburgh made things interesting as they took the next two games and pushed the series back to Philadelphia for game 6.
In game 6, Claude Giroux showed why he's the captain of the orange and black and delivered his most signature moment as a Flyer, most commonly known as "The Shift." To start the game, Giroux delivered a huge hit on Sidney Crosby and then raced down the ice to score a goal just 32 seconds into the game. The Pens were blitzed from the jump and were eliminated by the Flyers.
In 2019, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins met for the second season in a row in the Stadium Series. After the Pens took the first one in Pittsburgh, the Flyers had their chance for redemption in Philly at Lincoln Financial Field in front of over 70,000 fans.
For the first 57 minutes, it seemed as the Flyers would be bested by their rivals once again. This led to one of the most exciting comebacks in Flyers regular season history. The Flyers saw themselves down 3-1 with three minutes to go in the game. A quick goal by James Van Riemsdyk followed by a Jakub Voracek goal with 19 seconds left tied the game and pushed it into overtime.
As rain started to fall, Flyers legend Claude Giroux came up big once again putting the game away with a goal in overtime to stun the Pens and ignite the crowd of 70,000.
In the 2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Flyers and the Penguins met in what would go down, at the time, as the longest ever meeting between these two clubs as they battled in a five overtime thriller.
The Flyers came into Game 4, down 2-1 in the series, desperate not to fall behind three games to one. The Pens scored just two minutes into the game, but after that the matchup was pretty much a stalemate.
The Flyers answered in the third period as John LeClair's power play goal made it a 1-1 game and the matchup headed to overtime. In overtime, it became a track meet and a battle of who the better conditioned team was.
Flyer Keith Primeau ended the race and scored the game winning goal, 90 minutes into overtime, ending the third-longest overtime game in NHL history. This win gave the Flyers all the momentum as they won the final two games to close out the series in six games.
