Before the extension of Rasmus Ristolainen two weeks ago, the Flyers were looking at a potential replacement for him. A lot of rumours popped up, and one of them was that Chuck Fletcher was interested in Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry.

If Ristolainen would have been traded, the team would have to find a replacement for him and the first candidate was Petry.
However, Ristolainen was extended so nothing happened.
Eric Engels, a beat reporter for Sportsnet in Montreal, wrote that the Flyers and the Canadiens were actively discussing a trade that would've have sent Petry to Philadelphia and James Van Riemsdyk to Montreal.

It would have involved Montreal to retain a part of Petry's $6.2M salary, as his contract is running until the 2023-24 season. The Flyers would also have sent a good prospect in the trade to make it more attractive.
With that being said, it would have been difficult for this trade to go trough because Petry have a 15-team no-trade list and Philadelphia is on it.
