The Philadelphia Flyers and The Tough Career Start of Joel Farabee: What to do?
Joel Farabee has been in the NHL for a four seasons now. Usually any player who has been in the league that long and struggles as badly as Farabee has this season would likely get immediate "trade him" or "see if a change of scenery helps him find his game again" types of responses from annoyed fans, but is it too soon for those types of knee-jerk reactions with Farabee?
As has been well documented by now, last off-season Farabee underwent disk replacement surgery in his neck and was unable to participate in any legit off-season training due to the recovery time for the injury. He did participate in training camp, but did so in a limited capacity, and while some may think we're far enough removed from the injury and subsequent surgery that it shouldn't be an issue any longer the fact is that's not necessarily true.
Another player who has undergone the disk replacement surgery and returned to play hockey competitively in the NHL afterward is current Vegas Golden Knight Forward, Jack Eichle. Eichle underwent the procedure roughly 6-8 months before Farabee, and while he has shown flashes of the player he was before the injury that led to the Buffalo Sabres drafting him, some will surely argue he still hasn't fully returned to being himself on the ice yet.
Farabee has not been himself since returning from the injury, but it's a fair argument that there's the potential he's just not back to his baseline on conditioning. However, that argument doesn't seem to fly with head coach John Tortorella who has now benched the Forward twice mid-game in less than two weeks. Tortorella did recently say he has not given up on Farabee and he did acknowledge that the injury, though in the past, is mostly likely still playing some role in the 23-year-old's play.
It's fair to say that perhaps neither play ever will return to what they once were. The procedure the two forwards underwent is a very new procedure that nobody truly knows the ramifications of especially when it comes to playing a contact sport long-term.
With that said, what do you want to see the Flyers do? Should they give Farabee at least this off-season and the beginning of next season to see if he can get it together before they attempt the "change of scenery" trade scenario, or is it best to just cut ties now and let the chips of the rebuild fall where they may?
