Chuck Fletcher, the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, attempted to trade James van Riemsdyk but was unwilling to budge on offers, reportedly. After the trade deadline of 3 p.m., Fletcher awkwardly announced that his veteran forward had no interest, even lowering his asking price to a 4th round pick.

JVR is currently making $7 million, which counts against the cap, Fletcher was willing to retain 50% of salary to sweeten the deal. Even though Fletcher waswilling to keep half of his contract, the Flyers were unable to find a team to take on his $3.5 million cap.
'The market spoke. I didn't have any offers until about 1:40 (p.m.). I got a call from a team and they had a concept that if they were able to move a forward off their team, then they'd have interest in acquiring JVR. We talked about the parameters and what the deal would look like. It made sense from that standpoint, but all along it was conditional on the other trade going through, and eventually the other trade fell through (about 25 minutes before the deadline).

The Flyers and Detroit Red Wings had reached trade negotiations, but they were unable to come to an agreement that would have made the move possible. Van Riemsdyk, 33, will complete the season in Philadelphia.
