As a junior and NHL player, Wayne Simmonds has dealt with a lot of racial slurs during his entire hockey career.

As a result, someone may lose their faith in humankind, and that is understandable since there was once a time when a Red Wings fan threw a banana on the ice during a penalty shot, not long ago.
According to a recent interview Simmonds conducted with The Players Tribune, he has spoken about how he was doubted his goal to make it to the NHL even by his teachers as a child.
The fact that he was literally an underdog is bound to make you empathize with him. In spite of the fact that he may not have won a Stanley Cup during his career, he has played on some great teams all the while and has been able to prove many wrongs along the way.

Furthermore, he's one of those players who'll leave it all on the ice, as he fights for his teammates all the time.
"My third grade teacher actually made us write a little report on career day, and we had to fill out what we wanted to be when we grew up, and then research it or whatever. Standard stuff. All the kids wrote doctor, lawyer, veterinarian, Mountie, astronaut. Of course, I wrote, "Pro hockey player."

My teacher brought the paper back to my desk, and she was like, "Wayne, you can't choose
that. You have to be serious."

And I said, "I am serious. I'm going to play in the NHL." She said, "No."
I said, "Yes." Wayne, you "Hockey player." "Wayne, dear..." "Hockey." I refused to change it, and I think she literally gave me an F on the assignment. I had to take
the paper home to my mom and everything, and I was just like, "Can you believe this, Mom?"
