It's the end of an era in Philadelphia, as Claude Giroux has been traded to the Florida Panthers earlier today. Obviously, he will be remembered as one of the best player in franchise history, as he played 1000 games as a Flyer, registering 900 points.
He will also be remembered as a great teammate, but above all as a fantastic captain.
But every story has an end. Will he come back this summer as a free agent? It's a strong possibility. We aren't there yet though.
Let's focus on the present.
Owen Tippett is obviously the center piece of this trade for the Flyers. What can we expect from him? We'll try to answer to this question.

Tippett's stats in the NHL are underwhelming for a 10th overall pick. In 97 games with the Panthers, the right winger only registered 14 goals and 33 points. That's not a lot for a player who scored a ton of goals during his years in the OHL (128 goals in 213 games).
Something that I noticed while watching his stats is that he shifted from being a sniper to a playmaker. Yet, his force is his shooting.
So, how can we explain his lack of production since the beginning of his career in the NHL? Well, one thing is that he hasn't been used much by his coaches in Florida. In 94 games, he has an average time on ice of 11:56. He was dominant during his time in the AHL with 58 points in 58 games since the 2019-20 season.
One thing that should come to our attention is that, while playing alongside one of the best player in the league in Jonathan Huberdeau last year, Tippett's production didn't picked up. His defence is also a major issue, as Dom Luszczyszyn from the Athletic noticed. And it's been a problem since his juniors years.
At the end of the day, Tippett certainly have the offensive skillset to be successful at the NHL level. One of my fears is his game on 200 feet. We know that the Flyers like to emphasize on the ability of a player to play a responsible game.
But I have the sense that if Tippett is used 4 or 5 minutes more at the NHL level, his production is going to pick up. He still has the potential to be a 2nd line player who could register 50 to 55 points per season. But he's a project.
We should get a first look at him on Tuesday, as the Flyers will play against the Red Wings.
