As the summer of 2023 comes to a close and the off-season winds down, the horizon is now graced by the approaching training camp, while NHL preseason games have been scheduled for the latter half of September. Both the Montreal Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers are evaluating their summer results and are in the process of assembling their rosters for training camp, aiming to determine the regular players who will stand with their respective teams.

Given that both teams are currently undergoing rebuilding phases at various stages, some significant undertones and storylines have been developing between these two teams over the past months and even years. It is expected that this rivalry will once again heat up to full intensity.
These two clubs have a storied history of battles dating back to the 70s, extending into the 90s and even more recently. An article from The Hockey Writers highlights a few key points that indicate the resurgence and rekindling of this rivalry.

A prominent topic among Canadiens fans revolves around the recent NHL draft. Many fans were anticipating Matvei Michkov to don a Montreal sweater. However, this expectation was thwarted when the Canadiens passed on him opting for David Reinbacher, a defenseman at 5th. The Flyers selected Michkov at 7th overall.
Numerous Canadiens fans felt that defence was not the optimal choice and that an offensive addition was more pressing. As Michkov's return to North America approaches, his performance will be closely watched to determine whether the Canadiens' choice was the correct one.
Additionally, the matter of general managers comes into play. Initially considered for the Montreal job after Marc Bergevin's departure, Danny Briere was eventually bypassed in favour of former player agent Kent Hughes. Both individuals possess extensive knowledge of the game, with one having been an NHL player and the other having managed contracts for fellow players. Habs President Jeff Gorton's decision to choose Hughes stemmed from a desire for a change in direction.
Lastly, an underlying narrative involves Cam York and Cole Caufield. The Flyers initially held the 11th overall draft choice but opted to trade down to the 14th pick, ultimately selecting York. Despite a challenging prior season, York made a strong impact upon his call-up, emerging as a standout defenseman for the team. Interestingly, the Flyers faced jests for picking York over Caufield, who was the subsequent available choice.
As both players have proven themselves valuable assets to their teams, the significance of this point seems to balance out, with both players likely becoming cornerstone figures for their respective franchises in the years ahead.
The upcoming season promises intrigue for both of these teams and the outcome in April, as well as their standing at that point, will be closely observed.
