"Ever since their 10-game losing streak ended in early December, the Philadelphia Flyers have not laid too many eggs. Unfortunately, Thursday night was a rare clunker with a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on home ice. Carolina needed to be play desperate hockey and the Flyers did not have much of an answer for them. The Hurricanes dictated play for much of the first period and they scored the only goal of the frame at the 4:40 mark. Jeff Skinner's shot the left circle trickled through the pad of Petr Mrazek and former Flyer Justin Williams was right on the doorstep to slam it over the goal line. The second period was not much better for the home team as Teuvo Teravainen doubled the Hurricanes lead about six minutes in. After taking a pass from Teravainen, Sebastian Aho went below the goal line then found Teravainen in front of the net where he beat Mrazek doubled the Carolina lead. Six minutes later, Williams struck again for his second goal of the night as he got his stick on a Brett Pesce shot to redirect it past Mrazaek. The Flyers were doubled up in shots, 28-14, through the first 40 minutes, but showed some signs of life just over a minute into the third period. Claude Giroux passed through the neutral zone to Sean Couturier, who made a nice saucer pass to the front of the net where Travis Konecny had his stick on the ice to knock it home. Williams continued his big night in his former home arena by setting up Carolina's fourth goal of the night at 14:24 of the third period. Williams led the rush into the Flyers zone and then passed across to Aho, who settled down a bouncing puck to quickly beat Mrazek to the short side with a wrist shot. This is the Flyers first regulation loss since February 1 and they blew a chance to move into first place of the Metropolitan Division. The good news is that the Pittsburgh Penguins are getting ran out of the TD Garden in Boston right now, so they will not gain any ground. The Flyers will be back in action Saturday afternoon at the Tampa Bay Lightning. "
