"The Philadelphia Flyers had a huge advantage in shots, scored on the power play and dominated the possession numbers against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight. However, if you just look at the score, you'd think they got ran out of the building in a 5-1 defeat.
The Flyers had a much better first period tonight than what we saw at the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. They outshot the Lightning 9-3, but were unable to find the back of the net. Andrei Vasilevsky showed why he is a Vezina Trophy favorite by stopping a Travis Konecny breakaway midway through the period and a great backhand chance by Claude Giroux late.
All the good feelings from the first period were wiped out by a Brayden Point goal just 25 seconds into the sandwich frame. The All-Star forward found a soft spot between Robert Hagg and Andrew MacDonald and snuck a backhander behind Michal Neuvirth for his 22nd goal on the year.
Another defensive breakdown led to Tampa Bay's second goal just shy of the midway point of the period. Matthew Peca was allowed to bring the puck out front from below the goal line and he found Yanni Gourde all alone at the side of the net for the easy tap-in.
The Bolts jumped ahead 3-0 with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 17:29. Ryan Callahan knocked the puck away from Jakub Voracek and then completely undressed Shayne Gostisbehere on his way to sliding the puck past Neuvirth's left skate.
Travis Konecny continued his hot streak by getting the Flyers on the board with a power play goal at 13:18 of the third period. The young forward scored in his third straight goal by getting a feed from Voracek in the slot and quickly shooting in past Vasilevskiy. Claude Giroux had the secondary assist on Konecny's 10th goal of the year.
Whatever momentum that goal gave the Flyers were lost as Vladislav Nemestnikov answered just 47 seconds later. He would score another goal just over three minutes later to ice the game.
While this result stings a bit, it doesn't erase that the Flyers have still won eight of their last 10 games and are right in the thick of the Metropolitan Division race; something nobody thought would be possible about two months ago.
The Flyers will return from the All-Star break on Wednesday with a big game at the Washington Capitals."
