Last night's game in Washington started off great with both Nolan Patrick and Travis Konecny scoring early, but the wheels came off over the final 40 minutes in a 5-3 loss to the Caps. The Flyers don't have much time to stew over Wednesday night's loss as they are right back at it at the New Jersey Devils tonight.
Tonight's game becomes even more crucial after the defeat in DC. Getting no points out of back-to-back Metropolitan Division games is not ideal. The Flyers are 5-3-4 within the division this year and that record will need to improve if they want to earn a playoff berth this spring.
Alex Lyon finally made his NHL debut when he replaced Michal Neuvirth midway through the third period last night and stopped all five shots he saw. He is expected to make his first NHL start versus the Devils as Neuvirth admitted that he is not fully recovered from a stomach virus that caused him to miss practice earlier in the week.
Besides the change in net, we will not know if there are any other differences in the lineup until the team hits the ice for their warmup skate. One possible change we could see is Mark Alt inserted in for Brandon Manning, who struggled mightily versus the Capitals.
The Devils are coming off a 3-1 victory at the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night, which snapped a four-game losing streak. They enter tonight's game just two points ahead of the Flyers in the Metro standings.
