"Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL became known world-wide for all the wrong reasons when 17 students and faculty members were killed during a mass shooting on February 14. Just 11 days after the horrible tragedy, the Stoneman Douglas hockey team won the Florida state boy's hockey championship after upsetting two higher seeded teams. The players gave up 17 of their championship medals to honor the victims who lost their lives upon returning to the school. Flyers defenseman and Florida native Shayne Gostisbehere attended Stoneman Douglas High for two years before his family moved to Connecticut. Although he never played hockey there, the school still holds a special place in his heart. "I'm not the biggest political guy there is,'' Gostisbehere said on Thursday, per philly.com. "But it is my old school. My hometown. And it's cool to watch these guys stand up for what they truly believe. Obviously, they want some change. It's cool to see how some of the kids who survived are coming through it and … handling themselves as young adults.'' The Flyers will be playing at the Florida Panthers on Sunday afternoon and their arena in Sunrise, FL is about 15 miles south of Parkland. Gostisbehere has invited the entire Stoneman Douglas hockey team to be his guest for the game and he will meet them beforehand. "It will definitely be cool to see them,''Gostisbehere said. "And to get their minds off everything they're going through and hopefully have some fun for a few hours.'' A very cool gesture from Gostisbehere!"
